VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner)

How about staying in someone’s home instead of a hotel room? I’ve used this site many times as have my family and we have never been disappointed. You can communicate with the actual owner (most times) and sometimes negotiate the fee.
I used it to rent condos at Kannapaali Shores in Maui. It was Christmas and the rental fee was about $200.00/night for a one bedroom (also had a sleeper sofa) very clean, spacious condo with a great view of the ocean. I actually could watch the whales from my windows. My daughter and her family had the condo down the hall from me, and it was about the same price. We rented the same condos for the next two years, and got to know the owners.
This same daughter rented a three bedroom ski in ski out condo in Breckenridge, CO. one week before Christmas, and negotiated the rental fee to half of the asking price. Instead of paying $500.00/night, she (and we, babysitters ) paid $250.00. She’s contacting this owner for Thanksgiving week. I’ll let you know how she does.

This post was mentioned on Twitter by BoomerTrippin: Vrbo-Vacations to rent by owner. Great to site if you are going to be in an area for a week or more. http://su.pr/2XQSuh...

on April 13, 2010 6:53 pmBoth my vacation rental house and vacation rental condo on Sanibel Island are listed on VRBO. They do pretty well for me as an owner, and I use them to find vacation rentals when my husband and I travel.
My properties are listed on several other traditional rental sites, some not quite as good as VRBO, one a bit better (TripAdvisor/Flipkey)
But the site that creates the most confidence for me as both owner and renter is a new Facebook application: http://www.secondporch.com
With Second Porch, because it is a completely transparent platform, I have a better sense of who is contacting me and who I am contacting. There are no veiled email addresses and anonymous reviews. The essentials are disclosed. It’s a new app so the listings are not nearly as numerous as VRBO and TripAdvisor/Flipkey, but what’s there is reassuring so I use all of them as both owner and renter.
